Originally an image was prepared ona stone, but now a plastic or metal plate is used. Ink is then transferred from the relevant parts of the image to the finished item.
Offset litho transfers the image to an intermediate carrier - invariably a sheet of rubber - from which the image is then printed onto the paper or board.
